The Monday Minute 12/8/24

The latest from pro pickleball player, Jilly B

Hi all!

Welcome to the Monday Minute, a 60-second list of what I’m exploring and thinking about. Feel free to forward along if the pickleball spirit moves you.

What/Who I’m Thinking About:

I’ve never been “into” Tony Robbins per se but I heard him on a podcast talk about how he “primes his mind” first thing in the morning and that really resonated with me. You wouldn’t step on the court without warming up your body, would you? So why would we start our day without priming our mind and getting into the right mindset? This could be a gratitude practice, or some breath work, a meditation, cold plunge (or doing anything hard) or a combination of things that work for YOU

My key takeaway: If I wake up on the wrong side of the bed, it doesn't have to mean my day ends before it can even start. I can treat my mind like I treat my body before a pickleball tournament. I've been doing this for about five days and it's been pretty game changing.

Tool I Can't Live Without:

Faster hands and perfect counters can come from a $3 ball and your garage wall. This warmup drill trains my eyes (and hands) to meet the ball IN FRONT OF ME. I NEVER step on the court without first doing this drill.

If I just tossed you a ball, you would NEVER naturally catch it the way I’d want you to hit a pickle ball. So do this drill to train your mind and body to catch the ball way in front of you (say hello to perfect counters and the feeling of "swatting flies").

Quote(s) I’m Pondering:

“Failure isn’t a lesson, it’s a tragedy.” Peter Thiel, legendary Silicon Valley investor and billionaire

Ok, this got my head hurting, because as a former tech entrepreneur and D1 athlete we are taught that we “learn more from our failures than successes!” But Peter Thiel is like nope, hold my beer.

He says, “Failure is massively overrated. I think people actually do not learn very much from failure. I think it ends up being quite damaging and demoralizing to people in the long run…I think failure is neither a Darwinian nor an educational imperative. Its is always simply a tragedy.”

I have literally never thought of failure as...failure (lol). But maybe it's time that I do?

What I'm Taking:

Hard to find!

100% Grass Fed Bone Broth Protein Powder. I have tried just about all forms and brands of protein powder & collagen and it’s really hard to find products that don’t use the hooves or hides of the animals. This just uses the bones!

What's New:

I am so incredibly excited to announce Jilly B "Fantasy Camps" in Newport Beach, CA at the legendary TTC. These are boutique, highly customized 2-3 day camps for no more than four people. I'm only doing one per month and if you're interested in learning more, reach out to jillybcamps@gmail.com.
