The latest from pro pickleball player, Jilly B
Hi all!
Welcome to the Monday Minute, a 60-second list of what I’m exploring and thinking about. Feel free to forward along if the pickleball spirit moves you.
What/Who I’m Thinking About:
David Goggins, “The toughest mother F$#ker on the planet”:
He went from 300 lbs, unable to read or write for most of his adolescence, growing up in an abusive household…to becoming a NYT best selling author and the only member of the US armed forces to complete Seal training (Hell Week 3x), US Army Ranger School, and Air Force Tactical Air Controller Training. He holds the world record for pull-ups: 4,000 pull ups in 17 hours. He HATES running more than anything in the world but has completed 60+ ultra marathons.
David says:
“I’m not a smart guy. I’m bottom of the barrel. I have to read the same page over and over and over again to learn something. It’s the most frustrating thing in the world, the way my brain works. So I sit there with a pen and paper and I have to write everything down, every single page, until it becomes photographic memory.”
“I feel sorry for no one. I was the lowest form on earth. No talent. No ability to learn. And I know what it is to be rock bottom and built it up. Nothing is easy for me.”
But this Area of His Brain is HUGE!
Andrew Huberman tells Goggins that “there's a brain structure called the anterior mid-cingulate cortex…what's interesting about this brain area is that when people do something they really don't want to do, this brain area gets bigger. Now here's what's especially interesting: The anterior mid-cingulate cortex is smaller in obese people. It gets bigger when they diet. It's larger in athletes. It's especially large or grows larger in people that see themselves as challenged and overcome some challenge.
And in people that live a very long time, this area keeps its size.
In many ways, scientists are starting to think of the anterior mid-cingulate cortex not just as one of the seats of willpower but perhaps actually the seat of the will to live."
What does Goggins say to this? “See, now we're talking.”
What I’m reading:
Tim Ferris’ “Tools of Titans” (basically, a composite of the best interviews Tim has done with famous athletes, movie stars, tech titans, etc.) Kristin got me this a year ago and I only just started it (and am obsessed). A few of my favorite quotes/thoughts:
“‘Everything around you that you call ‘life’ was made up by people that were no smarter than you.’” - Steve Jobs
From Marc Andreesen, "Do you have a red team in your life? Someone or a few people who will stress-test your most treasured beliefs? If not, get on it."
Quote(s) I’m Pondering:
“Don’t lie in your diary. Don’t cheat at solitaire." - Rick Rubin To me, this means to lie to yourself is to do a disservice to yourself. If you can't be honest with yourself, with whom can you be?
“Tonight I will be in my bed." - Chris Sacca
Chris repeated this phrase over and over when biking from Santa Barbara, CA to Charleston, NC to remind himself that the pain he was experiencing was only temporary.
I do something similar when playing in a tournament and it feels like there is no end in sight to the pain. Maybe I’m nursing an injury, or it’s 95 degrees and 90% humidity and I’ve lost my ability to pivot because every one of my toes are cramping. I tell myself, “only two more hours. Anyone can do anything for two more hours, Jilly.”
It’s simple but effective.
What's New:
I am so incredibly excited to announce that we are going back to Tres Palapas in Baja, Mexico October 25-29 and we're bringing Scott Crandall with us! Words fail to describe how special this camp is to me and it's been awesome to see its growth. We are adding instructors (like Scott), cool new afternoon seminars on recovery, the mental game (including an open Q&A w/ me and Scott), and adding new night-time match play events. Basically, bigger and better!

What I'm Taking:
I've been testing Olympic Rx for six months and the result? I've eliminated soreness from my life (crazy sounding?! I know, but it's the truth). No matter how long or hard my workout or tournament day is, I am literally a fraction as sore as I used to be before finding Olympic Rx.
I take a tablespoon 5x/week in the morning (w/ or w/o food). In layman's terms, it helps you use MORE of your muscle potential (did you know we only use 20-25% but up to 80% when we are in flight or fight?). Code JILLYB for 15% off.

Winning Nationals doesn't come without some controversy, and KDubs and I detail all the drama in our latest pod.
